SWAN Abraham - The British Architect: or, the Builder's Treasury of Stair-Cases

London, Printed and Sold for Robert Sayer Map and Printseller 1768 (?) viii, 16pp, 4pp publisher's notices, 60 plates 43x26, cloth covered boards Spine missing, cloth missing from some of the boards, binding more or less intact, edges of pages discoloured with light spotting but in good condition; would make a good restoration project. This edition of Swan's popular work was published sometime after his death and his copyrights had been acquired by Sayer. The collation is identical to the 1758 third edition, other than the addition of a list of Sayer's other publications. Later authors such as Peter Nicholson and Thomas Morris were disparaging about Swan, dismissing his work as adding nothing but 'a confused condition of mind', but in the 18th century his work was held in sufficiently high esteem for this book to the first work on architecture published in America, in Philadelphia in 1775.
