SMALL John William - Scottish Woodwork of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries Measured and Drawn for the Stone by...

Stirling, Eneas Mackay/London, Bernard Quaritch (1878) 1898 Unpaginated, 100 plates with separate pages of description, index, etc 44x35, yellow cloth, red crest on front and text on spine Cloth grubby and lifting somewhat from the boards, corners bumped and rubbed, endpapers browned, scattered foxing on first few pages, good thus. First published in Edinburgh in a limited edition of 250 copies, this second edition had 500 copies, of which this is number 134. Very nice images. Small practised as an architect and designer of furniture in Edinburgh and Stirling, and produced several books similar to this which showed off his outstanding skills as a draughtsman. But he appears to have suffered financial problems from the 1880s onwards and his career went into decline (Dictionary of Scottish Architects).
