One man reading a newspaper, the second man conversing with the lady and the third man smoking a pipe. Annotated in pen lower right: "illustratie by Hildebrands Veerschipper", indicating that this was meant as an illustration for Hildebrand's (ps. for Nicolaas Beets) short story 'De Veerschipper' (The skipper) in the well-known work Camera Obscura (first published in 1839). The illustration refers to the moment where skipper Rietheuvel tries to fool a somewhat conceited lady.l Pen and brown ink over pencil on paper, 132 x 210 mm.
