Descriptive text by Laura Lushington of the windows and their iconography, together with related passages from the Bible. Stained glass did not exist before Christian times; the art of stained glass is essentially a Christian art. In Christian churches the windows became a means not only of illuminating a building, but also of communicating visually Bible stories and Christian truth. The great Gothic cathedrals of medieval Western Europe offered vast potential to the stained-glass craftsmen. As the master masons extended their artistic skills and technical knowledge, their increasingly complex systems of buttressing and vaulting allowed for progressively larger areas of stained glass, with the resulting magical effects of ever-changing light and colour. In their quest to depict Bible stories and characters graphically and colourfully, the craftsmen transcended their art to produce works which contribute to the overall mystery and grandeur of the medieval cathedral.
