WELCH, MICHAEL S. - Rails to Sheffield Park

Southampton, Kingfisher Railway Productions. 1988, First Edition. (ISBN: 094618450X). Hard Cover, 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. (The ISBN number printed of 0946184488 refers to another book and the one used is the correct number) For 70 years the Lewes to East Grinstead line led a quet existence, serving isolated farming communities which typify the Sussex Weald. When traffic declined and closure was imminent, the legality of the closure was challenged in 1955 by a local resident and British Railways were forced to re-open the line. When the route finally closed railway enthusiasts joined forces with local inhabitants to 'preserve the puffer for posterity', and they eventually reopened the five mile section from Sheffield Park to Horsted Keynes in August 1960 - called the Bluebell Railway, after the wild flowers which decorate the lineside in spring. This book is a pictorial history of the Lewes-East Grinstead route from its opening in 1882 through to 1988. B2F. Near Fine/Near Fine.
