Portrait frontispiece. Mandell Creighton (1843-1901) was historian and successively Bishop of Peterborough and Bishop of London. His life by his widow published in two volumes in 1904, has been ranked high among biographies but the mere bulk of this and his own works discourages present day readers. Yet he does not deserve such neglect, and the author has written this readable biography to show Creighton's character as a Christian and a historian; his thought on the Church of England and its position in the nation; his actions and his outlook as a bishop; and, the chief problem of his episcopate, ritual controversy; the booh ends with a summing-up. NOT EX LIB R1. Very Good/Very Good.
