The book is based on unpublished documents in France and Italy and not only provides new information on the formative years of the cardinal-minister but also deepens understanding of manners and mentalités in a specific period of European history. Mazarin's career in France after 1642 is well known, but his years in papal service - which brought him into contact with Richelieu and led to his permanent move to France - were less appreciated.
