FINN, TIMOTHY - Knapworth at War - Stories from an English Village 1939 - 45

London, Duckworth. 1982, First Edition. (ISBN: 0715616765). Hard Cover, 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine price clipped dustjacket. An account of the small Leicestershire village of Knapworth and how its 60 inhabitants faced up the the war. The grand manouevres of the Knapworth Home Guard were grand enough in their way, bu 'Operation Longstop' seemed merely to be bringing out the same old village muddle - in uniform, with added pomp and farce. Against the distant chances of a foreign invasion had to be set the grim certainty that the Bishop was coming down for evensong in October, to bless the churchyard wall, a wall that had not yet been built. Nor was Uncle Hugh, arrested as an enemy alien during the shooting season, behaving in any way beyond expectation. The author writes with zest and humour about his childhood family and neighbours, presenting the unforgettable village character of those days. NOT EX LIB C3E. Fine/Near Fine.
