["Organizationally active as a social democrat since 1880, Eduard Rieger began to work as a writer and editor for various party magazines in Liberec in Northern Bohemia, Brno in Moravia and in Vienna. In 1889 and 1891 he was a delegate at international socialist congresses and was arrested and convicted several times for political offenses. Rieger was a member of the Reichsrat from 1897 to 1918;in October 1918, after the end of Austria-Hungary, he was a member of the Provisional National Assembly in Vienna, in March 1919 of the Austrian Constituent National Assembly and was a member of the National Council from 1920 to 1934. Rieger, who was arrested several times at the beginning of his career as a writer and journalist, as a member of the National Council, campaigned not only for social policy issues - including comprehensive education for employees - but also for freedom of the press.
