Durand, Sir Edward Law - Cyrus - The Great King : A Historical Romance

Hardback , no dustjacket. ¶ An epic poem, in Thirteen Cantos running to some 9000 lines of heroic couplet, by Major Sir Edward Law Durand [ 1845 - 1920 ] his only poetical work. One reviewer was prompted to state 'the experienced reader will percieve that we are face to face with a thing imagination boggles at'. Durand was active in the British Empire - he served with distinction in the First Afghan War and the Indian Mutiny, he was then Private Secretary to the Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab. Later he was asked to survey Bahrain becoming the first European to write about the Bronze Age antiquities there. Later serving in Nepal he retired in 1893. His only other work ( apart from official reports ) was a book of hunting reminiscences - Rifle Rod & Spear in the East (Murray, 1911)
