First French edition of one of the earliest scholary works on Gypsies, originally published in German (Dessau & Leipzig 1783). A comprehensive and highly esteemed work on Gypsy life and customs, especially devoted to their language. Grellmann deduced the Indian origin of the Gypsies because of the many similiarities between gypsy language and Sanskrit and Hindi. This has later been confirmed by other scholars.
