[MARANA, GIOVANNI-PAOLO]: - L'espion turc dans les cours des princes chrétiens, ou lettres et mémoires d'un envoyé secret de la Porte dans les cours de l'Europe. Seven volumes in four. Londres 1742- 1743.

Pp. (ii), xlvii, 382, (12); (ii), viii, 382, (15); (ii), 428, (16); (ii), 347, (13); (ii), xvi, 451, (13); (ii), 372, (10); (xii), 327. Title printed in red and black. With 7 engraved frontispieces, 4 folding plans or maps, 23 engraved plates, mainly portraits and costumes. Some marginal stain at the beginning of volumes one and two. Contemporary full calf, spines with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt. Marbled endpapers with matching edges. Binding worn and hinges weak, nevertheless a handsome copy. This work treats the history of Christendom from 1637 to 1688 as seen through the eyes of one Mohammed, a fictious Turkish spy. First published in Italian in 1684 and probably composed by the Genoese historian Marana (1642-1693). It became enormously popular and was translated into several languages and reprinted many times. This work fathered a new genre of literature of which Montesquieu's "Lettres persanes" is one of the most famous. Cf Blackmer 1072 (English edition).
