Contemporary calf, spine gilt with five raised bands and title-label, extremities rubbed, top of spine chipped, hinges cracking. Second edition, reissued from the first (Paris 1700), of this interesting account of the Mariana (or Ladrone) islands in the West Pacific and the Jesuit mission established there by Diego Luis de Sanvitores. Father Le Gobien, a French Jesuit writer (and editor to "Lettres édifiantes"), based his account chiefly on reports and letters by missionaries. Includes a letter by P.
