. Large 8vo. Pp. xii, 182, 243 + one double page map; (ii), 244-785. With text in Chinese and English. Partly unopened. Publisher's brown cloth, gilt lettering. Bookplate. Comprises: The first part of the She-King, or the Lessons from the States; and the Prolegomena. The second, third and fourth parts of the She-King, or the minor Odes of the kingdom, the greater Odes of the kingdom, the sacrificial Odes and the Praise-songs; and the Indexes. This set of works titled The Chinese Classics was first published in seven volumes at Hong Kong in 1871. We believe this is a reprint, and the first British edition. Another revised edition appeared in 1893-5 at Oxford (Clarendon Press). James Legge (1815-97), a Scottish sinologist who served as a missionary in China for 34 years, and later appointed the first Professor of Chinese at Oxford University. He was a prolific translator of classical Chinese texts into English, of which the most famous work is "The Chinese Classics" which includes extensive commentaries by Legge. Scarce. Cf.
