Publisher's decorated gilt cloth, t. e. g., others untrimmed, lightly rubbed at extremities. First American edition. Isabella Bird (1831-1904), probably the most loved Victorian lady traveller, became the first woman inducted into the Royal Geographical Society (1892). This narrative deals with her travels in China in 1897 along the Yangtze River from Shanghai visiting Hangzhou (Zhejiang province), Yichang (Hubei), Wan Hsien (Hebei), Nanjing (Kiangsu), and several places in Sichuan province.
