Contemporary half calf with silk stripes on covers, silk end papers, somewhat rubbed. First edition of this epic tale of life in Cambodia. Meyer was brought up in Paris and in 1908 he enrolled in the Indochina colonial service. In 1909 he moved to Cambodia where he resided for many years. This is a romantic story about a Camodian royal dancer in the king's harlem and a young French boy who came to Indochina to seek his identity. It's a complex novel in which the author describes the life and circumstances for the different people in the country; rice farmers, fishermen, poor peasants, wealthy merchants, royal servants and even kings.
