Jean Dupuis (1828-1912) was a French merchant who was very active seeking a trading route between Yunnan and the delta of Tonkin via the Red River. His account explains the difficulties with customs and the controversies and fights with the Black Flag Army who helped the Vietnamese government to defeat the French. In 1881 Dupuis was awarded the Delalande Guérineau prize by the Academy of Sciences in Paris. ("Mémoires de la Société Académique Indo-Chinoise de Paris. Tome deuxième"). Cordier BI 2518-9.
