Fine condition. ¶ Alain Vaes, contemporary American artist, was born in southern France (in, indeed, the old town where this church is located). He is the author and illustrator of The Porcelain Pepper Pot, and The Wild Hamster; in addition he has illustrated the classic tales Puss in Boots, and Reynard the Fox. He is also a renowned costume and set designer for worldwide ballet companies, including the New York City Ballet, the Boston Ballet, and the Fort Worth Ballet. He is one of few working artists whose work has been exhibited in the prestigious Pierpont Morgan Library in New York. In this pure watercolor, done without Chinese white or any form of gouache (the white is the paper), Vaes exhibits not only his extraordinary ability to render natural surfaces (wood, paint, stone) but to capture the magic behind the surface--in this case, the age-old mystery and brooding presence of The Door, an icon superbly captured in this extraordinary image
