This biography (1819) was Tytler�s first published work. Patrick Fraser Tytler (1791-1849) was an accomplished historian, who assisted Sir Walter Scott in the founding of the Bannatyne Club. �...Tytler helped bring about something of a revolution in British historical method � he insisted on the primacy of personal research in original sources, and the superiority of these to published memoirs, partisan manifestos, popular memories, and the programmatic morality of the author as the material or the organizing principle of historiography.
