Mills in the 19th century were built where they could use water power, such as in Gorham, Windham, North Buckfield-Sumner, Camden and Warren. There are 3 major types of black powder: military, for rifles and cannons used in warfare; blasting for use in mines, quarries, clearing land of stumps and rocks, preparing railroads cuts, etc.; and sporting powder for hunting. The industry was hazardous with frequent loss of life and property. Library markings, first blank page removed.
