Monhegan Island is one of Maine's most unique off-shore island and has had a tremendous part to play in Maine's history as site. of Maine's first fishing village in the early 1600s. For over 100 years it has been a summer art colony and attracted artists such as Robert Henri, Jamie Wyeth, Rockwell Kent, George Bellows, and Edward Hopper. Actor Zero Mostel had a cottage there as did members of the ancient New England Cabot family. Ray Phillips the "hermit of Manana" became famous as "The Island Shepherd". It is also known for its spectacular natural scenery. Author Taylor is a historian and lighthouse enthusiast.
