LALOY, LOUIS - Legendes des immortels

Paris: Societe des Trente / Albert Messein, 1922. FIRST EDITION of this collection of French adaptations of Chinese Taoist stories, which demonstrate a certain affinity with modern Latin American literary sensibilities. From a total edition of 520 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 20 PRINTED ON FINE IMPERIAL JAPANESE PAPER. AN ASSOCIATION COPY, from the library of DANIEL DEVOTO AND MARIA BEATRIZ DEL VALLE-INCLAN (their stamp on half-title and colophon). Devoto (1916-2001) was an important intellectual figure who counted among his closefriends many of the great literary figures of 20th-century Spain, France, and Latin America. There are a few light penciled annotations in Devoto's hand. Next to one story he remarks, "Parece Borges" (i.e. "It's like [a story by] Borges"). 8vo. ENTIRELY UNCUT, IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPS. Fine and bright, with no defects. An important book, and extremely rare in this pristine state.
