LAPORTE, JOHN FRANCIS - Soft-Ground Etchings by John Francis Laporte (includes "Four Cottages Drawn from Nature")

London: W. Baynes & Son, 1824. A STUNNING COLLECTION OF 32 HAND-COLORED SOFT-GROUND ETCHINGS BY JOHN FRANCIS LAPORTE (on 25 leaves: 5 leaves have 2 plates and one leaf has 3). Laporte (1761-1839) was one of the leading artists of the early 19th-century bucolic picturesque. Among the etchings are numerous topographical views: the Isle of Sheppey, Welling Herts, Evenling (Surry), Rosthwaite Bridge (Cumberland), Uxbridge, Sutton (Surrey), Riverhead (Kent), Knocholt (Kent), Harrow (Middlesex), Dorking (Surrey), Ambleside (Westmoreland), Abresford (Hampshire), Gravesend (Kent), Guildford (Surry), and Harleigh Castle (Caernarvonshire). Four of these plates constitute a series, "Four Cottages Drawn from Nature", depicting rustic dwellings. The remaining images are generic (and very pastoral) scenes of country life, showing peasants with horses (with and without wagons), cows, trees, lakes, deer, dogs, sheep, etc. BEAUTIFULLY COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Many of the scenes are colored to suggest daybreak or twilight. Folio. Bound in later (but not recent) half cloth and boards. FINE AND BRIGHT, with no defects. OF THE GREATEST RARITY: I have been unable to trace another set.
