FLAUBERT, GUSTAVE (ABRAM KROL, ILLUSTRATOR) - Herodias (illustrated by Abram Krol)

Paris and Rouen: Societe Normande du Livre Illustre, 1962. A striking and innovative livre d'artiste. The text is "Herodias", the least known of Flaubert's celebrated Trois Contes (Three Tales). The illustrations are 23 original full-page hors-texte colored copper-engravings on cut-out plates by Abram Krol. The plates are colored not by conventional processes, but rather by being overprinted with colored woodcuts, also by Krol. There are, furthermore, numerous smaller woodcut decorations throughout. Edition limited to 125 numbered copies beautifully printed on fine Rives wove paper. Folio. Loose as issued in original wraps. FINE AND BRIGHT, WITH NO DEFECTS. Housed in (slightly worn) original chemise and slipcase. Rare.
