Meiji 20 [1887]. 15x9.8cm small crepe paper book, opens Western style, with decorated wrappers. Perfect-bound with holes for sewing. This volume was published by the Hasegawa family when they were known as KÅ�bunsha, working from the address in Minami SaegichÅ� å�—ä½�柄æoe¨ç”º Tokyo, their first address. Detailed blue, black and gray woodblock prints with touches of red and orange. The translator Kate James was the wife of a naval officer stationed in Japan, and translated numerous fairy tales for Hasegawa publishing. English language text tells the tale of an evil badger who takes advantage of a mother fox, and the revenge of her cub. Wear to covers; front cover and first cho is detached at top. Staining to rear wrapper. Interior pages in good condition. .
