Cotton was a translator of John Calvin, and this work is dedicated first to "..The Sons of Levi: Namely, the Reverend Clergy of the Church of England.. this his long-since vowed, and now devoted service;" and subsequently to The Right Honourable Thomas Lord Coventry, Baron of Alsborough, Lord Keeper of the Great Seale of England (armorial crest on facing verso).
