COTNAREAUNU, Leon - Suites Francaises

1945. COTNAREAUNU, Leon [ed.]. Suites Francaises. Chroniques du "Figaro." NY, Brentano's (1945). Octavo. Two volumes. 367; 437pp. One of an edition limited to 100 copies "hors commerce," numbered and signed by the editor. Cotnareaunu, owner since 1934 of the Parisian journal "Le Figaro," had used the resources of the New York Public Library to gather this anthology of articles from the years 1934-1940. "Le Figaro" had voluntarily closed when the Nazis over-ran France, "rather than daily betray the truth, and the confidence of its readers." This anthology marks the re-opening of the 118-year-old newspaper. Among the contributors are Cocteau, Colette, Bergson, Duhamel, Mauriac, Maurois, Valery, Daudet, Giraudoux, Guermantes, Bernard Shaw, and Maritain. International affairs, politics, arts and letters, theatre, music and dance are included. Darius Milhaud writes on the Music of the Cinema; Ambroise Vollard on Gauguin. An important step towards the reconstruction of French culture after WWII. Spines browned; one cover starting, else fine in original printed wrappers. Inscribed to journalist Gabriel Robinet. .
