APPLETON, Samuel - Will of Samuel Appleton; with Remarks of One of the Executors

1853. APPLETON, Samuel. THE WILL OF SAMUEL APPLETON; WITH REMARKS OF ONE OF THE EXECUTORS [Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch]. Boston: Printed by John Wilson & Son, 1853. Inscribed by Bowditch (son of the famed American navigator Nathaniel Bowditch), one of the will's executors, to Charles Sprague, banker and poet, on the second blank: "Charles Sprague Esq with regards of N. I. Bowditch." Slim octavo. [4],32,[4] pp. Flexible red cloth, blocked in blind on covers, gilt-stamped title to front. Disbound; covers and blanks are detached with remnants of backstrip on spine. Text leaves in the last half of the book have an irregular puncture just at the bottom margin. However, covers and text leaves are clean. Because of the binding, it is offered as is. (Sabin 1847). Samuel Appleton (1766-1853) had a humble beginning in New Ispwich, NH but became one of the most successful American merchants and a noted philanthropist. His will is notable because, besides providing for his widow, family, friends, and servants, he left nearly a fifth of his fortune (industril stocks worth about $200,000) to scientific, literary, religious, and philanthropic endeavors.
