This is the only English translation of the fourth and final edition of this book, the definitive technical history of photography, written, reedited, corrected, and enlarged by the author over the course of more than fifty years; the fourth edition was first published in German in 1932, the translation in 1945; the first third of the book is devoted to the pre-history of photography, including early theories of light, ancient observations concerning the photochemical decomposition of colors, the history of the camera obscura and the magic lantern; then, beginning with the inception of modern photography, every important innovation, discovery, and technical improvement through the first quarter of the 20th century is covered, based on extensive research among archival documents and contemporary records; the author was an important figure in the technical history of photography; includes the author's prefaces to the 3rd and 4th editions, a brief biogrraphy of the author by Hinricus Luppo-Cramer, and a frontispiece portrait of the author'.
