- Shrek, the Famous Hermit Sheep of Tarras

Tarras School 2004 Softcover, 36pp. This book has been based on the true story of Shrek the hermit merino found on Bendigo Station, 15 April 2004. For six years the sheep had evaded musters in the magnificent Central Otago high country of New Zealand. Shrek was discovered by shepherd Ann Scanlan and was carried to safety by Daniel Devine (Cage). Shrek was carrying 25kg of fine merino wool and gave up 22 kg for charity. He was blade-shorn in front of a world TV audience by Peter Casserley on the 28th April 2004. The text for this book was written by the children of Tarras School and edited by teachers, parents and John Perriam. The story, written through the eyes of a child, tells of Shreks start in life at Bendigo Station, his journey to the mountains above, how he found a cave and made it home and, finally, how he was discovered and his road to fame. Illustrations for the book were undertaken, by Tarras resident artist Jenny Chisholm, herself a mother of two children destined for the school.
