Gideon Jan Verdam was born at Mijdrecht 1802. A gifted mathematician and phycisist, with a strong preference for military and civil engineering, combined with the the application of steam engines. Promotion at Leiden October 1825 with this thesis on 'Aggerum terreorum' (Bedijking, derzelver afmetingen, aanleg en voorziening [Dikes, their measurements, construction and implementation].
