SYNAGOGEN.- Amsterdam.- views - 'De twee groote Synagogen der Hoogduitsche Jooden, en het Oude-Zyds-Huiszitten-Aalmoesseniers-Huis van agteren, in 't verschiet'

D.J. Changuoin & P. den Hengst; Fouquet Jr. [1765 - 1785]. Oblong folio. Fine engraved view after J. de Beyer. 18th c. Meas. appr. 35 x 27 cm (engraved surface). From the famous Atlas van Fouquet, published 1783 w. a total of 100+ plates. Around 1760 the enterprising print dealer P. Fouquet Jr. decided to publish a series of views of Amsterdam that would give an accurate and detailed picture of the city at that moment in time. The widely known views from the historical works of Commelin, Dapper and von Zesen were outdated and the 4to Schenck prints, copied and added to by others, were of no great artistic value and often too small to allow any detail. Fouquet discovered a collection of original drawings, mainly by Schouten, J. de Beyer and Rienier Vinkeles and a few years later the first 'Atlas'appeared: 'Afbeeldingen van de wijdvermaarde koopstad Amsterdam, benevens des zelvs voornaamste gebouwen en gezigten...'. It was a great succes and for many years, 20 - 30, the series was extended, revised and some prints were changed for new ones. The Atlas van Fouquet grew out to be one of the most beautiful print series of Amsterdam, depicting the city when it was still pure and could boast so many monumental buildings and houses, as well as the lay out of its haydays.
