[One of the] 105 plates, all in elephantine folio. The drawings by Gerard de Lairesse ... the engravers are not mentioned ... according to Haller the engrs. were done by (Peter and Philip) van Gunst (?) ... the engraving is most elegantly done and artistically perfect...': Herrlinger II, 60: Norman Coll., 231: 'One of the finest anatomical atlases of the Baroque period ... For Lairesse, the anatomical illustrations Bidloo asked him to undertake were an occasion for an artistic meditation on anatomy, he displayed his figures in an emotional, almost tender manner, contrasting the raw dissected parts with the full, soft surfaces of uncut flesh, placing flayed, bound figures in ordinary nightclothes or bedding, setting ordinary household objects such as books, jars or cabinets in the same scene as cut-up torsos or limbs, and in one plate showing a fly crawling on an opened abdomen. His illustrations brought the quality of Dutch still life painting into anatomical illustration ... According to most recent scholarship, the plates were probably engraved by Abraham Blooteling, inventor of the rocker tool for mezzotint engraving.': Dumaître Paule, La curieuse destinée des planches anatomiques ... (1982), i.l.c.: Vasbinder, W., Govard Bidloo en William Cowper (Thesis, Utr., 1948): Includes an excellent survey and discussion of each plate. According to Vasbinder this book is the first anatomical work of substance to grant a very important role to microscopic make up and deatil of the human body.Chapter V on the Cowper feud.: Heirs of Hippocrates, 667 (lat. ed.): Wellcome II, 165: Cushing, B376: Norman Sale II, ...: Krivatsy, 1239: BMN I, 82: Waller, 1039: On Gerard de Lairesse, see: Thieme-Becker, XXII, pp. 233/37: '...der bedeutendste Vertreter des akademischen Klassizismus, der den in Rembrandts Kunst gipfelnden holländischen Realismus im letzten Viertel d. 17. Jarh. ablöst.': Nagler VIII, pp. 156/60: Wurzbach II, pp. 6-8: On Blooteling, see Wessely, 4, Waller, Noord Ned. graveurs, pp. 31/2: Nagler II, pp. 7/8: Wurzbach I, pp. 118 - 121: On the Cowper-Bidloo plagiarism see Heirs of Hippocrates 667: Choulant, p. 250/3: Russel, 211, note: Very good and clear impression of the plate on high quality paper and well preserved.
