III, 134: C. was a French protestant scholar. This work gives an introduction to French authors and works on Hebrew and oriental languages: The entries provide short biographical sketches or vitae, and testimonials by other scholars on the lives and writings. Colomesius compiled a similar work on the orientalists of Spain and Italy: The Tschirnhaus item following the Collomesius is a rare Spinozana, here in its first edition.: DSB vol. XIII, pp. 479 - 481: Ehrenfried Walther Tschirnhaus, 1651 - 1708,maths, physics and philosophy. 'In the autumn of 1668 he enrolled at the University of Leyden ... the most profound influence on him in these years, ... was that of Descartes's philosophy and mathematics, to which he was introduced in private instruction by Pieter van Schooten. ... he was introduced by his school friend Pieter van Gent to Spinoza, whose teachings he immediately adopted. With a letter of recommendation from Spinoza, he went to London in 1675... Leibnitz introduced Tschirnhaus to Clerselier, who had custody of Descartes's papers and allowed him to look through unpublished manuscripts. ... While continuing his mathematical research Tschirnhaus constructed effective circular and parabolic mirriors, ... he also made burning lasses, though not without flaws .. [Tschirnhaus] was unwilling to accept suggestions directly from other mathematicians, although he would later adopt them as his own inventions... This tactic led to bitter controversies with Leibniz, Huygens, La Hire and JakbI and Johann I Bernouilli; and it ultimately cost him his scientific reputation. [one of the disputes was provoked] ... by an incorrect method of finding tangents to curves generated by the motion of a drawing pencil within a system of taut threads. The method appeared in A MAJOR WORK OF CONSIDERABLE PHILOSOPHICAL IMPORTANCE, 'Medicina corporis et mentis (1686-1687), which was influential in the early stages of the Enlightenment. '... Tschirnhaus's achievements - ... - were far more significant than the average contribution made by university teachers of science during his lifetime.': Roller & Goodman, vol. II, p. 514: Catalogus Boekerij 'Het Spinozahuis', items 324, 323: comp. Waller 9702: Smith, History of maths., vol. I, p. 417: Cantor, vol. III, p. 107: See Hertzberger, Wolf collection (Cat. 150), item 732: 'Extremely scarce and unknown to van der Linde. Von Tschirnhaus (born 1651) one of Spinoza's visitors and correspondents was largely influenced by his ideas. It was v. Tschirnhaus who introduced Leibniz to Spinoza's philosophy and thus caused the meeting between the two philosophers.
