In the first paper the Curies first ued the word 'radioactive': Cajori: p. 296: 'Tracing the course of events somewhat more minutely, we find that the earliest determination of the spectrum of radium was made by E. Demarçay (1852-1904), from ore specimens by Mme. Curie. He found in the spectrum of impure radium chloride, besides the lines of barium, lead, calcium ans platinum, a strong new line..., which in his opinion confirmed the existence of a new element.'; First edition of the first announcement of the discovery of radium and polonium, never reprinted.: Tog. w. 4) A.H.
