Josephine Scribner Gates (1859-1930) was a popular author of children's books at the turn of the 19th to 20th century. Born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, Gates was known for her "Live Dolls" series and had written over 23 books by 1915. Her characters were dolls who came to life and interacted with the children who played with them. Several of her books were illustrated by Virginia Keep and though the illustrator of this particular book is unidentified, there is a strong possibility she contributed the color plates. Good .
