May 27, 1868. 1868. - Autograph sentiment signed twice in black ink on a 2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide slip of cream paper: "With George W. Melville's compliments. May 27 1868 / G J Whyte Melville". The slip of paper has been mounted on a slightly larger piece of card & there are 3 ink blots slightly affecting the first signature and the date. There is a vertical crease where the paper has been folded. Good.

Major George John Whyte-Melville [1821-1878] was a Scottish novelist and poet who entered the army in 1839, becoming a captaIn in the Coldstream Guards in 1846 and retiring in 1849. He published his first novel,"Digby Grand" in 1852, which became a huge success. He went on to publish twenty-one novels and was a popular writer on hunting. Many of his heroes and heroines were hunters and, by a strange twist of fate, he lost his life in a hunting accident in 1878 while galloping quietly over a ploughed field in the Vale of the White Horse.
