Boston, MA: February 21, 1866. 1866. - Closely written 4-page letter penned in black ink & filling both sides of 2 sheets of cream paper, each approximately 7-1/4 inches high by 5-1/4 inches wide. Signed "George Lunt". 2 small holes in the upper section of each page just graze a few letters of the text without rendering them illegible. He alludes to various literary matters, including his own new book ["Origin of the Late War"] and a book of poems which he says he will be happy to review. He recommends that Winter should make a point of meeting a leading lawyer from Vermont , "a young man of very superior abilities & qualities" who works in the same building as Winter. He also refers to the fact that both he and Winter have seamen among their ancestors. George Lunt [1803-1885] was an American editor, lawyer, author and politician. Before and during the Civil War he was editor of the Boston Courier together with George S. Hillard. He opposed the estrangement of the South and defended slavery. William Winter [1836-1917] is best remembered as a drama critic and biographer of theatrical personalities. He was a contributor to "The Galaxy: A Fortnightly Illustrated Magazine" published at 39 Park Row, New York City. Lunt refers to this address in his letter as the building where both Winter and the young Vermont lawyer have their offices. Good .
