Good. - Octavo, olive green cloth titled with decorations in gilt on the spine & with a vignette of a conductor on a podium stamped in gilt on the spine & in blind within decorative frames on both covers. The covers are rubbed & bumped with the extremities faded. The spine is faded and the head & tail of the spine are chipped with small pieces out. vii & 346 pages & a 14- page illustrated publisher's catalogue, including a 4-page extract from "The Watchman". One page is soiled and there is scattered foxing & light staining throughout. Good.

Moravian-born opera impresario Maretzek was dubbed the "Napoleon" of opera by his friends and followers. Arriving in New York in 1848 as the conductor and manager of the Italian Opera Co. he produced four seasons of Italian opera in his first three years in the city. He presented Adelina Patti for the first time in opera in 1859. Good .
