Boilly, Louis-Leopold - La Paresse". A Vintage Color Lithograph by Boilly

Circa [1824]. [1824]. Circa [1824]. [1824]. Good. A WONDERFUL FRENCH CARICATURE BY LOUIS-LEOPOLD BOILLY - sc The 14-1/8 inch high by 10-3/8 inch wide color lithograph caricatures a peasant family. Seated in a chair, the colorfully attired mother has nodded off with her knitting needle and ball of wool in her lap. A book rests on the arm of a boy who is sleeping with his head on his mother's shoulder. The father, standing behind them with a pipe in his hand, yawns deeply. Titled at center under the image "La Paresse". "G. lith. de Delpech" is printed at left under the image. Boilly's signature is reproduced in lithograph at right followed by the date "1824". Printed on heavy stock, the lithograph is mounted onto cardboard. The edges are stained and darkened. Short tears to the top and bottom edges and a longer tear to the right edge of the print are repaired and reinforced by the mount. Good.

The French artist Louis-Leopold Boilly (1761-1845) moved to Paris in 1786 where he set up his successful business as a painter and lithographer. Credited with drawing the first dated French lithograph in 1802, he went on to successfully caricature social and political subjects. Good .
