Desmond MacCarthy was a British literary critic and journalist; he was a member of the Cambridge Apostles, the intellectual secret society, from 1896. Though often thought to be a member of the "Bloomsbury Group", MacCarthy in fact had a wider circle of friends including Lytton Strachey, Bertrand Russell and G. E. Moore whom he met at Cambridge. In 1917 he joined the New Statesman as drama critic, and in 1920 became its literary editor. He wrote a weekly column under the pen-name "The Affable Hawk". Later, in 1928, he became a literary critic for the Sunday Times, and several volumes of his collected criticism were published. This is the third volume of his 'collected essays' series which includes essays of an autobiographical character as well as many presenting personal impressions of literary & general subjects. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. 311 pages. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Slight foxing front/rear pages, but body of book mostly clean and unfoxed.
