Sheppard, Nathan, ed - Darwinism Stated by Darwin Himself; Characteristic Passages from the Writings of Charles Darwin

 1536058250,
New York, D. Appleton and Company, 1884. First American Edition. Cloth. Small octavo (4 7/8" x 7 3/4), terra cotta cloth. Cover decorated in black stamped border design, which is blind stamped on the back cover. Spine titled in gilt. 351, (17)pp. with publisher's ads for scientific books, including a list titled "Standard Evolution Library". Very nice condition. Slight wear at the extremities. There is a (probably) nineteenth century pencilled price on the front free-endpaper, which has been erased. There remains an indentation from the pencil of the heavy-handed bookseller. "This volume contains, of course, only an outline of the contents of the twelve volumes from which it is compiled, and for which it isby no means intended as a substitute. It will, on the contrary, we should hope, create an appetite which can be satisfied only by a careful reading of the works themseves." A great sales pitch, which is followed by two pages of "Darwin and His Theories from a Religious Point of view. Very good + .
