De La Fontaine, Jean - Fables de la Fontaine

Paris, Garnier Freres, Libraires-Editeurs, 1868. Hardcover. Royal octavo; pp; xxxii, 667 with index; Frontispiece plus over two hundred seventy woodcut illustrations by Grandville; Full leather, decorated with a gilt rule border and spine decorations, at center is an oval inset of a rooster in copper with an opal set in at the bottom right, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt; The binding has been professionally rebacked, but many years ago; Intermittent foxing, predominately in the first 50 leaves, edge wear and corners worn, otherwise very good. This volume is from the home of President Theodore Roosevelt and later resided in Alice Roosevelt's home in Washington DC. It bears the bookplate of Edith Kermit Roosevelt, TR's second wife. There is a note in Edith's hand on a preliminary stating that the book was "Bound by Mrs. Flour", a second line reads, "Alice should have this". This was acquired through Alice Roosevelt's decendants in 2010. A beautifully bound edition of a classic book of fables with extraordinary provenance. Very good .
