Alfred Nesbit Brown was as a Church Missionary Society missionary who served in New Zealand from 1829 to 1884. He wrote this, his only printed work, as a response to the death of his only son, Alfred Marsh, who died at age 14. He also founded a scholarship in his memory at St John's College in Auckland.
