- ""XLCR"" Stamp Finder & Collector's Dictionary; stamp collecting made easy

Thomas Cliffe Ltd. Rhyl, n.d.(c.1950), Photographic reprint of an original edition published by H.E.Harris & Co. Boston, USA.Paper covers, staple binding.V.g./No Jacket.V.g.; pages foxed and browned, owner's signature and address inscribed in the box provided on t.p.For connoisseurs of faulty transcription of Cyrillic, this inexpensive guide for stamp collectors (original price 6 old pence) takes some beating. The printer has attempted to reproduce these letters using an ordinary Roman font, with hilarious results: for example, under U we have UAPSTBO: Bulgaria, followed by UAPCTBO 6b[inverted:VL]ARNR: Bulgaria (no attempt has been made to reverse the final two letters ""I"" and 'YA').Thankfully the Arabic is reproduced photographically.Following a chapter on 'Stamp Treasures' - the story of some stamps that are worth fortunes - there is a brief introduction stating that ""Some stamps - early Afghanistan and Egypt, certain of the Indian Natives [sic] States, and others - are printed entirely in 'wiggly writing' and therefore cannot be indexed at all"".Pp.7-11 list the words found on stamps and their countries of origin; pp.12-25 illustrate ""Miscellaneous hard-to-identify stamps"".Pp.26-31 provides a glossary or dictionary; p.32 has a concluding chapter headed ""Know the world through your stamp collection"", making a plausible argument around the educational value of stamps for youngsters. The back cover illustrates some rarities described in the first chapter.Despite the poor quality paper and fungus-friendly covers this booklet has survived with little physical damage save for a small crease on the top right front cover.32 pp. bound with rusty steel staples. In English.
