Pritchard, Andrew (1804-1882) - A HISTORY OF INFUSORIA Living and Fossil: arranged according to "Die Infusionsthierchen" of C. G. Octavo original blindstamped ribbed cloth spine gilt titled direct [edges worn/rebacked & recased with old spine underlaid by newer cloth, spine cover loose and hanging] List of author's works preceeds titlepage ++[4p=Preface] +[3p=subscriber's list} +[1p=errata] +439pp including index + 12 leaves of plates each stubbed as each plate on stiffer paper. A very neat clean copy -no foxing -narrow stripe of edge tanning to first and fore-edge of 2nd plate -less than 4mm. This first edition seems only to have had a small print run as there are only 95 copies ordered and there was a 2nd issue in 1842 and several later editions. *An early study of these microsopic animalicules although some confusion still between animal and vegetable with 786 species described. A leading natrual historian and unitarian, Pritchard was key to furthering the study of microscopic organisims, he believed that religion and science were one. The Dictionary of National Biography says this book was "long a standard work, and the impetus it gave to the study of biological science cannot be overestimated".
