London, Paul Jerrard 1854 according to British Library Hand colored lithographs (14) heightened with gum & printed by Paul Jerrard with text printed in gold throughout. . Imperial octavo (according to publisher's advert) green pictorial gilt lacquered papier-mache hard covers with brown spine, lower cover plain enamel, "Paul Jerrard Patentee" (small tip chips, some rubbing, possibly recased) All Edges Gilt. Fine floral gilt moire endpapers, floral titlepage with gilt titling and facing presentation wreath-of-flowers plate neatly filled in by E.L. Brigstocke to M.H.P. Brigstocke. Gilt pictorial & gilt printed contents page + 12 numbered hand colored and gum-heightened plates of flowers + 12 facing gilt descriptions decorated with nude cherubic children +[1]p list of Paul Jerrard's Drawing-room Books for the Approaching Season printed in gilt throughout. Text & illustrations slightly edge-browned but not affected by any foxing, slight offsetting from gilt titles. *This binding "enamel cover richly embossed in gold" is the most expensive format listed in the catalogue at end of the book. A truly fine Victorian Gift book scarce in this special binding. Bloomsbury Auctions catalogue entry for another copy attributes it to Henry Noel Humphreys, quoting Howard Leathlan's article in Book Collector 1991 which reproduces Humphreys’ original drawings for two pages and suggests he also wrote the text (p.179).
