Paris, Franciscus Muguet 1693 Quarter page text illustration to start of text + large emblematic head piece containing coat of arms of the Dedicatee by P. Giffari + large printer's mark on titlepage and several large initials, head- and tailpieces. . Large folio (over 16 x 10 inches) catspaw calf on 6 raised bands with compartments floral gilt (lacks spine label/1cm chipping down to head and foot of spine/hinges cracked but held by cords/tips worn) all edges rouged. Titlepage + [5]pp dedication/contents + clxxvii +1402 columns (ie 701 pages) +[57]pp of index/errata etc. This is the famous Benedictine Maurist edition by Pierre Coustant. Ownership label to pastedown, old line of Italian to titlepage and nice inscription to blank "Pray for donor D.Gregory James" else entirely clean, crisp with printed side and footnotes and wide margins. A long prefatory section deals with the difficulties of the work, the life of the saint and other background. The longest part of Hilary is the commentary on the psalms, then on the gospel of Matthew, the Trinity, Letters, Hymns and other fragments with and appendix and index concludes all that is extant.
