In contemporary tan calf, with cambridge panelling on both boards with decorative blind rules and corners. Recently re-cornered and rebacked with a black lettering-piece. Leaf size 185x110mm; [4], 360 pages. Half-title inserted in sympathetic facsimile. Ownership inscription 'Saml. Webster' at head of title-page. Paper repair to foredge of title-page and next leaf, not affecting text. Further ownership inscription 'Thomas Bendish' at head of p.1. Small piece missing at lower foredge corner of pp.37/38, not affecting text. Minor damage in margin at head of pp.41-52, without loss. Ownership inscription: 'W. Larner Sugden. Leek. | 25th Floreal, 1841. (-/9-)' in margin of page 50. It is interesting that an Englishman should use the name of the month from the French Revolutionary calendar, while using the Roman calendar for the day and year. Light tanning throughout. William Sugden, a Yorkshire architect, went to Leek in 1848 to oversee the construction of stations on the Churnet Valley Railway. His eldest son, William Larner Sugden, joined the firm in 1881.
