GRASSBY, RICHARD B - Ship, Sea & Sky The Marine Art of James Edward ButtersworthSout Street Seaport Museum with Rizzoli, New York, 1994. Oblong quarto hardcover, 128pp., colour illustrations. A few spots on page edges and light wear to dustwrapper edges. Near fine otherwise. Edward Buttersworth painted in New York in the mid-nineteenth century. He was among the best at recording with meticulous draftsmanship and sensitive modeling the nineteenth century clipper ship. Butterworths understanding of rigging and the setting of sails under way is unrivaled, and his use of light and animation separate his work from other marine painters. His ships were not intruders on the seas, but impressve symbols of the ability of man to control and harness the forces of nature.
